Earth Science for Society

home-imgThe Earth Science for Society committee believes that increased science literacy is essential for the students of today as they are the decision-makers of tomorrow and the future caretakers of the Earth.

Thank you to everyone who participated in ESfS 2017!

The Earth Science for Society (ESfS) Science Odyssey Exhibit will showcase three fun and interactive stations featuring hands-on geoscience activities. Our events will be hosted at two locations: the Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre (CRESRC) in Canmore, Alberta on Saturday May 13th and Saturday May 20th and at the GeoConvention in Calgary, Alberta on Monday May 15th. ESfS activities are designed for youth, but are enjoyable and educational for all ages. The ESfS Fossil Station will be the anchor of the ESfS event and allow participants to touch, identify and classify trilobite fossils. There will be two other activity centres which will include a combination of hands-on activities featuring rocks and minerals, a geology bootcamp, the rock cycle, and our changing world.

On Monday May 15 at the GeoConvention afternoon in Calgary, the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) and the Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre (CRESRC) will also host educational booths to complement the ESfS activities.

The May 13 and 20 Saturday ESfS exhibits will be hosted in Canmore at the Canadian Rockies Earth Science Resource Centre (CRESRC) which has additional geoscience exhibits to engage visitors. CRESRC exhibits include the Operation Bow Athabasca exhibit which is a tribute to the history of the Geological Survey of Canada work. CRESRC offers visitors the chance to use a microscope to observe rocks, fossils and core samples as well as to step back from the details to look at geology maps and seismic data from the area. The Science Odyssey ESfS Canmore Passport will suggest additional local science highlights for families to enjoy such as the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre and a fossil-filled, local hike. Anyone completing their passport can enter a draw for a fantastic geo-prize.
