ESfS in Motion

ESfS in Motion’s travelling exhibits showcase four fun and interactive stations: the Explore Space Station, the Trilobite Fossil Station, the Rock Cycle Station and the Our Changing World Station. Visitors investigate space travel and our solar system at the Explore Space Station. The Trilobite Fossil Station allows participants to touch, identify and classify trilobite fossils. The Rock Cycle Station has sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks and mineral samples to examine. The Our Changing World Station has activities related to plate tectonics and seismic methods.

ESfS activities are free, aimed at youth, but are enjoyable and educational for all ages. Activity stations will link exciting observations from the natural world with real applications in society. The Earth Science for Society committee believes that increased science literacy is essential for the students of today as they are the decision-makers of tomorrow and the future caretakers of the Earth.

Spruce Meadows Rock N Gem Show Aug 14-17, 2025
The CSEG Foundation’s ESfS in Motion team had the pleasure of chatting with over 600 visitors to the about Earth sciences. Visitors explored the world of trilobite fossils, sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, and seismic waves.
We also met geoscientists interested in volunteering with ESfS and educators and youth group leaders interested in attending ESfS.
Many thanks to volunteers Alex, Annette, Enisha, Helen, Julia, and Lorraine!

CRLC Rock & Mineral Show 2025
The CSEG Foundation’s Earth Science for Society (ESfS) team participated in the 2025 Calgary Rock and Lapidary Club (CRLC) Rock & Mineral Show. The event brought over 50 vendors together to create one of the largest gem show in Western Canada. The CRLC promotes an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals interested in viewing minerals, gemstones, and geologic demonstrations. The event took place between May 2nd to May 4th, 2025.

Demonstrations: faceting, beading, silver clay, geology, identification
Displays: minerals, crystals, rough rock, jewellery, tools/equipment
Special Event: Sapphire and Garnet mining for kids

The ESfS team set up an interactive trilobites and rock and minerals station for event goers to learn about the development processes of fossils, rocks, and minerals over geologic time.

National Geographic Live
ESfS-in-Motion collaborated with the CSEG-F to host an outreach table at the National Geographic Live events in January 2025. Dr. Andres Ruzo presented the “Hunt for Sleeping Giants”, captivating the audience with information about volcanoes and boiling rivers. ESfS-in-Motion volunteers shared seismic wave information and had visitors try “making an earthquake”. Youth and adults were excited to take a look at igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks as part of the Rock Cycle station.
